Observations on the Warhammer 40K Meta
Overall, there aren’t many surprises in these numbers. Adeptus Custodes being one of the most-played factions is slightly unexpected, considering the meta often prioritizes high-volume armies over elite infantry. Outside of that, most trends are consistent with what we saw at LGT last week.
Space Marines Lead the Field
It’s no shock that Space Marines are the most-played faction overall. Units like Shadowmark Talon and Redemptor Dreadnoughts are likely to appear on nearly every table, giving them a strong chance to dominate the tournament.
Top-Played Factions Indicate a Healthy Meta
After Space Marines, the rest of the top-played factions highlight a wide and healthy meta. Death Guard remain well-represented, showcasing a loyal player base, even though the army has taken minor hits in recent balance updates.
Following them, Tyranids, Custodes, and T’au all show strong representation despite historically struggling in the edition. This suggests two things:
-
Their rules and point values have improved in recent weeks.
-
The meta is unusually open, allowing multiple factions to be competitive.
Mid-Tier Choices and Meta Dynamics
The mid-tier factions include familiar names such as Emperor’s Children, Chaos Space Marines, Knights, and Daemons. These armies are strong options outside the most-played categories. Notably, CSM recently won the biggest tournament of the year, and Emperor’s Children have strong synergy with the current meta.
Lower-Representation Factions with Upside
Factions with fewer players, like Drukhari, Adeptus Mechanicus, and Grey Knights, show the most potential for underdog success. Ad Mech’s lower numbers likely reflect how resource-intensive and difficult the army is to manage. Drukhari may have gained additional players if there had been more time post-LGT for preparation.
Even factions with low representation still have strong meta potential—though Imperial Agents are a notable exception due to their extremely limited presence.
Predictions and Underdog Potential
For this writer’s money, it’s tough to bet against Shadowmark Talon Space Marines. However, the meta leaves plenty of room for surprises. For those looking to place their bets on underdog armies, Adepta Sororitas and Orks are strong contenders given the current rules environment.
The Las Vegas Open 2025 promises to be an exciting showcase of Warhammer 40K, where both established favorites and underdog factions can shine.
