Games Workshop has teased a new Drukhari codex for Warhammer 40K, but will the Dark Eldar finally earn the respect they deserve in the lore and on the tabletop?
Well, it seems like the end of Warhammer 40K 10th Edition is here, because Games Workshop is finally unveiling a new Drukhari Codex — the last faction book of the edition. For long-suffering fans of the Dark Eldar, this announcement brings both excitement and skepticism.
The Neglected Faction of Warhammer 40K
Drukhari have often served as the neglected stepchildren of the Warhammer 40K universe. Across multiple editions, they’ve been plagued with weak rules, outdated units, and a lack of meaningful updates. For many players, choosing Drukhari has been more of a test of loyalty than a rewarding competitive experience.
A lack of new sculpts and generally weaker mechanics have left the army feeling underwhelming. For years, Drukhari players have fought an uphill battle in both casual and competitive play. This new codex promises change — but can it deliver?
A Long-Awaited Codex Release
After waiting nearly two years, Drukhari fans are finally getting the codex that was promised. A new named character, Lady Malys, and at least one fresh sculpt are arriving with the book. These updates are a step in the right direction, but the question remains: is this enough to rebuild the goodwill that has been lost?
Two new models alone may not erase years of frustration, but they represent progress for a faction that has too often been left behind.
A Rough Start to 10th Edition
At the beginning of 10th Edition, Drukhari received a detachment rule that did little to improve their performance as a glass-cannon army. Even when Games Workshop released a second “emergency” detachment, it failed to elevate Drukhari into a relevant position.
While other factions saw their win rates ebb and flow in competitive play, Drukhari never really had their moment in the sun. Aside from a few high-level tournament players who squeezed results out of the army, the faction remained consistently underperforming.
In a game where balance is supposed to be central to design, such prolonged irrelevance is a serious failure on Games Workshop’s part.
What the New Drukhari Codex Could Bring
Right now, Drukhari have access to three detachments, with only two being viable at best. Many datasheets rarely see play, forcing players into narrow build options. Some competitive lists lean heavily on pairing Drukhari units with stronger Aeldari rules, rather than relying on the faction’s own strengths.
The new codex has the opportunity to change that. Based on recent codex releases, most armies are receiving between four and six new detachments. The Leagues of Votann set a precedent with four, not counting the seasonal Grotmas detachment. If Drukhari receive a similar number, this would provide much-needed variety and tactical depth.
Four new detachments on top of the existing three would give players a broader toolkit and, hopefully, at least one competitive option. Combined with Lady Malys as a new epic hero, the codex could finally inject excitement into the faction.
Will Games Workshop Respect the Dark Eldar?
The true test will come once the new codex rules are revealed. If Lady Malys follows the trend set by other recent epic heroes, she could bring powerful new abilities and narrative depth to the army.
Still, players remain cautious. Drukhari have been overlooked before, and until the rules are fully revealed, skepticism is justified. Past codex launches suggest it will be at least a month before we see the full impact on the tabletop — but leaks and previews should start emerging soon.
When they do, fans will finally learn whether Games Workshop intends to give Drukhari the respect they deserve or whether the Dark Eldar remain the eternal underdogs of Warhammer 40K.
Final Thoughts
The Drukhari Codex is the last big release of 10th Edition and represents a major opportunity for Games Workshop to repair a relationship with a passionate but neglected fanbase. Whether this codex delivers on that promise remains to be seen — but for the first time in years, Drukhari players have a reason to be hopeful.
What do you think? Will the new Drukhari Codex finally elevate the Dark Eldar, or will Games Workshop once again leave them in the shadows? Share your thoughts in the comments and let your voice be heard in the community!
