Check out the strongest Space Marines unit in Warhammer 40K and why it’s dominating lists in the current meta.
Space Marines are the darlings of the Warhammer 40K setting. If this is news to you, I’m sorry that I have to be the one to break it to you.
When it comes to content, media, models, and overall player attention, Space Marines are always at the top of the leaderboard. While their rules haven’t always matched their place in Games Workshop’s spotlight, there have definitely been points in Warhammer history where their popularity and rules strength have overlapped.
Now is one such time.
Not only do Space Marines keep getting consistent releases during the so-called “Year of Chaos,” but they also continue to receive new rules, buffs, and detachments that rank among the best in the game. That power has translated to real tournament success, including strong performances at the London Grand Tournament.
They may not have won the entire thing, but Space Marines made their presence felt. And looking at the results, one unit in particular is beginning to look like a must-take option in any competitive list.
The Redemptor Dreadnought Returns
Redemptor Dreadnoughts are back on the scene in a major way. If you’re looking to start a competitive Space Marine list for the next few months, beginning with this datasheet is almost mandatory.
The most common and effective build right now pairs the Macro Plasma Incinerator with the Onslaught Gatling Cannon.
Firepower That Matters
Shooting is where the Redemptor really shines. The Macro Plasma Incinerator is the star of the loadout, offering D6+1 Blast shots, hitting on 3+, with two powerful firing modes:
-
Standard profile: Strength 8, AP -3, 2 damage.
-
Supercharged (Hazardous) profile: Strength 9, AP -4, 3 damage.
Both profiles bring serious value. Against hordes, you’re clearing infantry with ease. Against vehicles or elite infantry, the boosted stats mean you can punch up and force trades.
Supporting that is the Onslaught Gatling Cannon: 8 shots, hitting on 3+, Strength 5, 1 damage, with Devastating Wounds. On average, you’ll push at least one mortal wound through, further increasing the efficiency of your shooting phase.
With these weapons combined, the Redemptor clears infantry quickly while still threatening bigger targets—especially when paired with vanilla Space Marines’ Oath of Moment, which allows +1 to wound against your chosen target.
Don’t Forget the Melee
The Redemptor isn’t just a gun platform. It also brings a brutal melee profile: 5 attacks at Strength 12, hitting on 3+, AP -2, and 3 damage each.
That’s not always enough to delete elite infantry on its own, but it’s more than enough to catch larger units or vehicles off guard. A single melee activation can swing trades heavily in your favor, especially when opponents don’t plan for it.
Durability That Trades Up
On top of its offensive flexibility, the Redemptor is extremely durable:
-
Toughness 10
-
12 Wounds
-
2+ Save
-
-1 Damage reduction
This makes the model a nightmare to remove efficiently. If your opponent needs to dedicate significant resources to push one off the table, they’ve probably already lost the trade.
And the kicker? All of this comes at just 195 points.
For that price, a Redemptor is right in line with a 10-man squad of Space Marines or similar bodies, but trades up far more effectively. In almost every exchange, the Redemptor comes out on top.
Detachment Support
And that’s all before you start factoring in detachment rules. The Gladius Task Force in particular amplifies the Redemptor’s strengths with rules like Advance and Shoot, Advance and Charge, and Fall Back and Charge.
Other detachments—Ironstorm, Stormlance, and Shadowmark Talon—also offer tools to make Redemptors even harder to deal with. Whether it’s mobility, board control, or stacking buffs, detachments multiply the model’s efficiency.
It’s no wonder competitive players are doubling or even tripling down on them. In fact, Innes Wilson’s list at the LGT featured three Redemptors—and the results speak for themselves with a finish in the Top 4.
Final Thoughts
The Redemptor Dreadnought is easily the strongest Space Marines unit in Warhammer 40K right now. With a deadly balance of ranged firepower, melee punch, durability, and points efficiency, it’s the kind of unit that forces opponents to play on your terms.
Expect to see one (or more likely two or three) Redemptors in almost every serious Space Marine list going forward.
What do you think? Are Redemptors truly the best Space Marine unit right now, or do you have another contender in mind? Drop your thoughts in the comments and let’s talk about the future of Space Marines in Warhammer 40K.
