Top Space Marine Factions in Warhammer 40K 10th Edition – Strengths & Tactics

Discover the top Space Marine factions in Warhammer 40K 10th Edition. Our complete guide ranks every chapter and breaks down their strengths, tactics, and best strategies for competitive play.

It might be easy to get lost in the sheer variety of Space Marine factions in Warhammer 40K. Between dramatic differences in colors and rules, figuring out where to start in this hobby is never easy. But, much like our guide for Chaos, here are the best Space Marine factions in the hobby right now.

1. Ultramarines – The Kings of the Space Marine Superfaction

If you want to play Space Marines, it is hard to stay away from the poster boys of the hobby. Ultramarines bring the perfect mix of top-tier rules, some of the most famous named characters, and near-constant presence in the lore.

What more could a person want?

Strengths and Playstyle

Ultramarines excel in a combined arms approach, functioning as a “take all comers” army both on the table and in the lore. If you want to play something between all-out melee and ranged combat, these rules are ideal.

Gladius remains one of the best detachments in the game, with reliable access to advance and shoot and advance and charge. Their stratagems are among the most versatile, especially the one that grants a lance to a single unit.

Almost every Space Marine army in the game comes back to this detachment, so why not play with the guys that invented it in the first place?

Synergy with Key Characters

Pair these rules with models like Guilliman, arguably the most important character for the Imperium right now, and Marneus Calgar, who synergize perfectly with the faction and army rules, and you have a recipe for a faction that will remain near the top of the meta.

Most armies start with Guilliman, Calgar, or both, and build from there with:

  • Shooting core: Ballistus Dreadnoughts, Vindicators, and other hulls that benefit from re-rolling hits and become deadly with +1 to wound. And, with Repulsor Executioners making a big comeback, they don’t hurt either.

  • Melee core: Bladeguard Veterans, Assault Intercessors with Jump Packs, or Vanguard Veterans.

Long story short, this faction and its detachment makes most units much stronger in the current meta, and this freedom is one of the biggest selling points for Ultramarines as the best Space Marine faction overall.

2. Black Templars

We haven’t yet seen the full impact of the new Black Templar meta after the release of their codex, but early trends are clear. This is going to become an oppressive faction in the competitive setting, especially if the horde armies continue to see play.

Emperor protect Chaos Cults and Genestealer Cults players if this faction gets as popular as Death Guard.

Strengths and Playstyle

Black Templars may not have access to Guilliman or Calgar, but a melee-focused army with multiple blender units gaining access to simple advance and charge from Codex: Space Marines detachments becomes extremely powerful. Plus, who doesn’t want to run Helbrecht and The Emperor’s Champion instead?

Great generic rules make new, specialized units stronger, and Games Workshop hasn’t fixed this issue yet. Black Templars have some of the best melee in the Space Marine datasheets and can boost themselves by using Gladius instead of the bland Templar-specific rules in their newest codex, and we see yet again the flaw in GW’s decision making.

Meta Potential

Expect Templars to play very aggressively from the start of the game, especially when running Stormlance or Gladius, but they also maintain strong shooting. Supporting large blobs of melee pressure with strong leader units and a gunline typically featuring two Repulsor Executioners creates an army capable of competing in any meta.

3. Blood Angels

The final faction to consider is Blood Angels, another army that broke the meta earlier in the edition (see Blood-less Angels).

Strengths and Playstyle

While GW walked back some overpowered rules, Blood Angels returned to solid and effective Codex detachments. They are now the fastest Space Marine army in the game and can punch well above their weight with appropriately priced units that feel very good to trade with.

  • Key units: Death Company Marines with Jump Packs, Sanguinary Guard, Vanguard Veterans, Assault Intercessors with Jump Packs, and supporting detachments.

  • Playstyle: Specialized toward melee, boosting all datasheets in the list with the exception of shooting, which becomes one of the biggest gaps for this faction.

Visual Appeal

Red, black, and gold make for one of the best-looking armies on the table, adding visual appeal to their formidable presence.

Honorable Mention – Dark Angels

The Sons of the Lion are a fun choice due to their versatility across detachments, though their gameplay often emphasizes soaking up damage rather than dealing it.

  • Strengths: Deathwing Knights are incredibly durable and can hold objectives.

  • Limitations: Some matches may feel stale if relying heavily on Wrath of the Rock.

Even if they aren’t the top faction in the meta, their resilience and variety make Dark Angels worth considering for your next Space Marine army.

Conclusion

Space Marines offer a wide range of playstyles, stunning visuals, and rich lore. Whether you prefer the versatility of Ultramarines, the aggressive melee of Black Templars, the speed and punch of Blood Angels, or the durability of Dark Angels, each faction has something unique to offer.
