What Happened to Captain Acheran and Chairon in Warhammer 40K?

Discover what happened to Captain Acheran and Chairon in Warhammer 40K and uncover the fate of these iconic characters from Space Marine 2.

The world of Warhammer 40K is not a forgiving one. In a universe defined by endless war, death is inevitable—but surprisingly, many named characters survive for decades in the lore. Still, no one is protected forever.

While some characters seem immortal, surviving every battle and ordeal, others meet their end in rather unceremonious ways. That is exactly what happened to Captain Acheran and Chairon (promoted to Lieutenant), whose deaths were confirmed recently in a manner that left many fans frustrated.

When Titus was officially announced as the new Captain of the Second Company of the Ultramarines, it was clear that Acheran was no longer alive. Fans, however, wondered how and why. Chairon’s absence from Titus’ command squad added further suspicion—he too seemed gone from the story.

Now, Games Workshop has officially confirmed it: both Acheran and Chairon are dead.

According to a Warhammer Community article, both heroes died while sacrificing themselves to stop a Genestealer Cult outside of any mainline story, tabletop game campaign, or video game narrative. While their deaths are framed as noble, the lack of a proper narrative or dramatic payoff has left fans dissatisfied.

From a lore perspective, their deaths conveniently clear the path for Titus to lead the Second Company, introduce new squad members for upcoming Space Marine stories, and give Games Workshop an opportunity to release new models. In short: everyone wins—except Chairon, Acheran, and the fans who wanted a meaningful conclusion to their stories.

For Acheran fans, there is a small consolation: a generic model remains available, allowing hobbyists to keep the character alive on the tabletop. Chairon, however, does not have such an option, leaving little justice for his character.

This situation might also reflect the recurring tension in Warhammer 40K between fan-favorite factions and others. Ultramarines players still enjoy a strong position in the lore and on the battlefield, but even they are not immune to questionable narrative decisions.

Final Thoughts

While the deaths of Captain Acheran and Chairon are disappointing, they highlight the sometimes harsh and unpredictable nature of Warhammer 40K lore. If you’re a fan of the Ultramarines or just love exploring the stories behind the Space Marine chapters, this is a reminder that no one is safe—even the most iconic heroes.
