Games Workshop’s latest decision has Warhammer 40K fans frustrated. Here’s why removing beloved characters could be a major misstep for Warhammer’s community.
Games Workshop is far from infallible as a company. As great as it is to receive consistent updates to models, game systems, and ongoing narrative direction, particularly in Warhammer 40K, sometimes fans are not pleased with how these changes are handled — and this latest situation is a clear example of that.
Space Marine 2 and Warhammer 40K
This time the frustration centers around Captain Acheran and Chairon, two fan-favorite characters prominently featured in the massively popular Space Marine 2.
From the moment Games Workshop and Focus Entertainment began showing new shots of Titus, there was a clear implication that something had happened. How could Titus now be Captain of the Ultramarines 2nd Company if Acheran were still alive to lead it? And why would Titus have a new Command Squad that notably did not include Chairon — one of his closest battlefield allies and narrative anchors during the campaign?
The signs were there. Fans connected the dots. But even when we expect characters to fall in the grim darkness of the 41st Millennium, how they exit the narrative matters.
And in this case — it was handled poorly.
Rather than receiving a meaningful narrative moment — in a novel (of which we are getting several featuring Titus), or in a future cinematic, or even in a teaser for a potential Space Marine 3 — the deaths of Acheran and Chairon were quietly confirmed in a small paragraph in a Warhammer Community article.
For characters with that level of fan connection and narrative relevance, this presentation just feels rushed. It doesn’t carry the emotional weight, the finality, or the respect that fans expected. Even if we all knew what happened, the delivery is what stings.
Games Workshop can and does handle character deaths well when the narrative is allowed to breathe. This wasn’t that. This was an administrative update, not a story beat.
It’s likely not something Games Workshop wants to repeat going forward — especially when Warhammer Community is meant to celebrate the universe, not casually eulogize it.
Hopefully, Acheran and Chairon will receive proper closure in upcoming novels, supplementary lore, or future video game installments. Fans clearly still care, and the narrative deserves more than a footnote.
What Do You Think?
Should major character deaths always be handled in books/games — or is this level of reveal acceptable?
Let me know your thoughts in the comments or on social — is this a harmless lore update, or a major misstep by Games Workshop?
